Friends

Next time you walk down the street, think of all the faces passing you by. You will not recognise most people; they will seem indifferent to anyone else in the crowd (or lack thereof). These people mean nothing to you. But to someone, they mean a hell of a lot. What if nobody in the world recognised you? You would just be another face in the world, much like the people you pass on the street, but on a much larger scale.

For some, friends are someone who will listen to you moan or are someone that you feel you can cry with or in front of. Others may believe that friends are there to help you out when you need it, in return receiving the same offering from you. To me, a friend is someone to make me laugh and brighten up my day. A good bit of fun is always in order when I am around friends.

I'm sure that you've all heard about the theory that you know people, who know other people, who know other people and so on. The bottom of it is that in the end, everyone is connected to everyone through friendship. One could only dream that this could become a physical reality...

Communication

Communication now comes in many forms. The modern forms are of course texting, MSN, Facebook and Twitter; all of which I am guilty of. Though I think that the greatest form of communication is through song lyrics; although, being a music lover, I would probably say that! Most artists of today and indeed the past express their views through music. Rage Against The Machine are a perfect example.

Without communication, we are nothing. Look how far we have come. From the first notions of communication, to where we are today, communication plays a key role in our society. Though I suppose losing all forms of communication would bring our current society not only to it knees, but probably to it's destruction.

Losing communication at the dawn of man would probably not be such a big deal. The species' span of existence (relatively speaking) would be short, and would fizzle out, without affecting too much else.

It's amazing today the ways in which we have learnt to communicate, not only in the terms of today's technology, but in things such as body language. As we grow up, we learn that certain gestures or postures convey different meanings. Even things such as eye contact, when made at the right time.

For example, if you and your friend were talking to someone else, and they said that they wanted to do something that you think is dangerous/wrong/bad, and your friend shares the same opinion, you make eye contact, communicating with eachother; telling your friend that you share that opinion.

That is the height of human intelligence. Two beings can make eye contact and know exactly what the other is thinking, without anything else. We can tell many things about someone by their body language; perhaps in the style of Sherlock Holmes, or at least the 'modern' one?

Light

There are many things that the human race cannot do without, and light is one of them. I'm not just talking about endlessly bumping into things by not being able to see, but the complete collapse of our world systems (in the environment and the economy, to name a couple) if, say, light ceased to exist. Without light, plants can't photosynthesise, so we would have no plants, which means we couldn't feed animals, so we couldn't feed ourselves and we would die, probably slowly and painfully.

What if light (in general) was "turned off" for a small period of time. Let's say, one minute. In that time, all manner of hell can happen. Cars will smash into each other, destroying buildings, numerous people would die in surgery in hospital, people will be hit by cars, each other, there will be blind rioting, etc. The list continues. Inevitably, a lot of damage will be done, with long term effects. Due to the cost of clearing up, the world economy will collapse, people may be made homeless if their houses were destroyed and a load of other things.

The thing is, we take light for granted. Without it, even for a tiny period of time, the earth would fall into devastation and destruction. Something so magical and complex as light may appear simple, harmless. But it can harm us in it's lack of existence.

Energy

Energy cannot be made, it cannot be destroyed. So how do we 'generate' electricity then? Well, 'generating' doesn't happen. It is the wrong word to use. We merely convert energy, from one thing to another.

Burning coal, which contains energy, releases energy (in the form of heat). This heats up water (transferring the energy), which, in turn, will move a turbine. All through the transfer of the same amount of energy. All a 'generator' does, is convert the motion of the turbine to electrical energy. We have the same energy as we started with in the first place, but now the energy is more accessible.

It amazing to think that while everything in the world seems to function as it does, there is one figure that can describe the amount of energy in the world. It doesn't change, but we still don't know what it is.

What if we could see energy? Would we be able to discover any more about our planet?

Improbability + Insignificance

Imagine the billions of people on earth. Now imagine the billions of other living things on Earth. Feel insignificant yet?
Now just imagine the fact that if you were never born (and as I will explain later, it's near impossible that you were), it would not make the slightest bit of difference to anyone else! Life would carry on, a slightly different set of events, but Earth would survive without you.
Now imagine the sun. We can't live without it. Now imagine that there are roughly 100 billion suns in each galaxy, and an estimated 100 billion-or-so galaxies in existence. Feel insignificant?

Now back to the earth, and back to you. What are the chances of you being you, and not somebody else? What is the probability of your parents both having roughly the same quality of education, going to the same university, meeting each other there (for example)? Now what is the probability of them:

  1. Falling in love?

  2. Choosing to have children?

  3. Giving birth to a child?

And what is the probability of that sperm and that egg meeting and making you, and not someone entirely different? And what about the exact same probabilities, for each one of your ancestors? The number involved are huge, so big, and the odds so low, that YOU are practically impossible. Yet you are here.

Feel important now?
