Music

Music can greatly influence a person, from an early age. As we develop, our tastes may change, whether due to new genres or bands that simply catch your ear, or due to peer pressure. Yes, peer pressure. I know it may sound a little strange, but it's a common topic for teenagers.

I certainly have that experience, though I have yet to give in. You see, I like metal and rock, such as Slipknot, Bullet For My Valentine, Killswitch Engage and Sonic Syndicate. My classmates, however, mostly like rap, hip-hop and generally whatever happens to be in UK's 'top 40' or so at the time.

I do not like this music at all, but make no point of putting it down. Other may say to me, 'Oh yeah - Slipknot are cr*p. Why do you even like that stuff?'. Somedays I retort, 'Yeah, but I think the same of your music choice.'

I don't actively put down others' choice of music, but I use it as a retort to make them think about this: why can people not just accept that other enjoy different music? Nobody is forcing them to listen to it, so why do they have to comment on it?

You may reach a time in your life where (finally) nobody really cares what you listen to - as long as it isn't too obscure! But I guess that as we get old, the younger generation will again come into play, saying that it's, 'old music'.

I think that 'good music' just happens to be the music that YOU personally enjoy. There should be no boasting about how 'my fave band is way better than yours' and you shouldn't really care about their music either.

As a final thought - what would a world be like without music? For many, it's not as bad as a world without something we need to live, but...if we can just...imagine...
