Improbability + Insignificance

Imagine the billions of people on earth. Now imagine the billions of other living things on Earth. Feel insignificant yet?

Now just imagine the fact that if you were never born (and as I will explain later, it's near impossible that you were), it would not make the slightest bit of difference to anyone else! Life would carry on, a slightly different set of events, but Earth would survive without you.

Now imagine the sun. We can't live without it. Now imagine that there are roughly 100 billion suns in each galaxy, and an estimated 100 billion-or-so galaxies in existence. Feel insignificant?

Now back to the earth, and back to you. What are the chances of you being you, and not somebody else? What is the probability of your parents both having roughly the same quality of education, going to the same university, meeting each other there (for example)? Now what is the probability of them:

1. Falling in love?


2. Choosing to have children?


3. Giving birth to a child?

And what is the probability of that sperm and that egg meeting and making you, and not someone entirely different? And what about the exact same probabilities, for each one of your ancestors? The number involved are huge, so big, and the odds so low, that YOU are practically impossible. Yet you are here.
